    • Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca Casablanca

      The Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca records the cultural history of a race and community of Morocco who have been a significant presence in the country even though their numbers have been relatively marginal. Located in the Rue chasseur Jules Gros in Casablanca, the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca has been an establishment of its kind. The Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca serves not just as a protector of the Moroccan Jewish cultural heritage and history, but it also doubles up as a museum of ethnography.

      Set up in the year 1997 by the Jewish community of the city of Casablanca, the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca houses international Jewish relics along with indigenous Moroccan ones. The Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca was established by the Foundation of Jewish-Moroccan Cultural Heritage. The museum is open on all days of the week and operates from 10:00am to 06:00pm; on Sundays though, visitors require a special permission or appointment. Spread out in a floor area of 700 Sq Meters, the exhibits on display are an amalgam of religious, historical, traditional and ethnographical relics. Artistic artifacts are also seen to be brushing shoulders alongside them. Some of these articles include, oil lamps, Chanukah lamps, Torahs, Torah covers, traditional clothing, paintings, sculptures and photographs.

      The Museum offers guided visits, sponsors seminars and conferences on Jewish-Moroccan history and culture, and organizes video and slide presentations.

      On special request, it organizes group visits in Arabic, French, English or Spanish

Casablanca: The white city's name derives from "Casa Branca" given by the Portuguese when it was a little Berber village situated on the Anfa hill. The city now housing almost 4 millions inhabitants, was developed in the early 20th century when the French protectorate representatives decided to build the artificial port and to plan the construction of a new city . Casablanca the cosmopolitan and economic capital is famous for its nightlife with lots of excellent restaurants, night clubs, cinemas, spectacles….

The Museum of Moroccan Judaism of Casablanca is a museum of history and ethnography, created by the Jewish Community of Casablanca in 1997 with the support of the Foundation of Jewish-Moroccan Cultural Heritage. It uses world-class standards of conservation for its national and international collections

The Museum of Moroccan Judaism presents religious, ethnographic and artistic objects that demonstrate the history, religion, traditions and daily life of Jews in the context of Moroccan civilization

 

Exhibits, Libraries and Seminars

The Museum, which covers an area of 700 square meters, is the first of its kind in the Arab world. It consists of:

  • A large multipurpose room, used for exhibitions of painting, photography and sculpture;

  • Three other rooms, with windows containing exhibits on religious and family life (oil lamps, Torahs, chanukah lamps, clothing, marriage contracts (ketubot) Torah covers…) and exhibits on work life;

  • Two rooms displaying complete Moroccan synagogues;

  • A document library, a video library and a photo library.
