2002  Fes festival press clippings:

You have to take your hat off to the Fez festival
Fes Festival 2002

arts.telegraph

The medieval city offered ritual chants, brass bands from Harlem and an astrophysicist from Vietnam. Allah be praised, says Peter Culshaw

With a stunning setting in the largest extant medieval city in the world, the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music, now in its eighth year, has become one of the world's great musical events.

Diva of the Desert: the passionate Arabic melodies of Mauritania's Dimi Mint Abba were one of the high points of the nine-day event

The adventurous programming policy of the Moroccan organisers means it often showcases extraordinary artists who are little known in the West. In previous years, I became so fascinated with singers such as Alim Qasimov and Abida Parveen that I ended up seeking them out in their native Azerbaijan and Pakistan - even though Islamabad was not the most sensible place to be, last September 11. But the Fez festival can take you on all sorts of cultural adventures.

Under the patronage of the King of Morocco, the festival was founded in response to the Gulf War, as a place for dialogue between different faiths. It remains startling to see a generally Muslim crowd singing along to gospel groups or a Jewish singer like Françoise Atlan, whose sweet and liquid singing at this year's event was backed by a Arab-Andalucian orchestra of Islamic musicians.

There are numerous echoes in Fez of the great Islamic flowering of science and arts in medieval Andalucia. When the Muslims and Jews were expelled in 1492, many came to Fez. Indeed, Fez is a kind of Moroccan Florence - a centre of learning since the Qaraouine University was founded by two women in the ninth century and it remains one of the great holy cities of the Islamic world.

An important element historically of the city's culture has been the different esoteric Sufi Brotherhoods, and during the festival they could be seen performing their music at midnight in the heart stopping beautiful Moqri Palace in the heart of the Medina, next to the Fez Hadara, the centre of an intriguing off-festival programme of music, plays and workshops. There was also one performance in the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis of French medieval chants and powerful ritualistic music of the Fraja Group of Meknes, only spoilt by the circle of cameramen, desperate to capture this photogenic moment on film.

Several of the groups at the festival put in cultural context places sadly better known for their newsworthiness, such as the wonderful singing of the Aznach Ensemble, a traditional women's group from Chechnya who played under the massive Barbary Oak tree in the tranquil setting of the courtyard of the Batha Museum.

A group of exiled Afghans, the Kabul Ensemble, played a rapturously received concert at Bab Maqina, whose castellated walls at one of the gates of the old city made an impressive venue for the main evening concerts. Their classical music, which illustrated the historic musical connection between India, Persia and Afghanistan, was of settings of Sufi poets such as Hafiz and Rumi. Anraud Desjardins film The Sufis of Afghanistan was shown - a record of a decimated culture, destroyed by the Communists and then the Taliban.

Desjardins was one of the more interesting contributors to the morning colloquiums which discussed the dangers and opportunities of globalisation. Some impressive speakers were flown in, from academics and religious leaders to a representative of the World Bank. The sight of a Vietnamese Buddhist astrophysicist discussing the roots of terrorism with an Islamic academic was remarkable, even if many other delegates bunked off to watch World Cup matches. Perhaps the most telling example of globalisation and a cultural clash came during the England-Argentina game, where the TV transmission of the second half was delayed for an hour of live Friday prayers.

In previous years the organisers had been criticised because the performances were too expensive for ordinary Moroccans. They responded to this by putting on free concerts in the square of Bab Boujloud, where thousands of locals gathered to watch daily concerts by visiting artists.

As festival highlights, two superb performances stood out. The first came from the "Diva of the Desert", Mauritanian singer Dimi Mint Abba, who mixed Arabic melodies and African percussion to extraordinarily passionate, soulful effect. But pick of the bunch, and my new favourite band, were the extraordinary McCullough Sons of Thunder from Harlem, a "brass shout band" who mix call-and-response with brass and percussion.

Their leader and trombonist, Elder Babb, is in his sixties, and walks around the audience playing unbelievably energetic solos while the band summon up infectious gospel grooves. He told us with conviction that if we were sick we would be healed, and that God was with us. The audience were totally won over. As he asked us to worship the Lord, the Moroccan next to me, who had been dancing and clapping, fervently responded "Hamdulillah!" - Allah be praised.

Fes Festival 2002

May 31 - June 8, 2002

This year's theme :

The world is in search of Wisdom

From May 31 to June 8 of this year, the World Sacred Music Festival will be underway in Fes, Morocco. In its 8th year, this festival will again formally assemble sixteen international performers from Ireland, U.S.A., Sweden, Portugal, France, Lebanon, Syria, Bulgaria and Morocco for a week’s festivities of entertainment and cultural exchange. There’s no way to enumerate the off-site and impromptu gatherings that inevitably characterize the ambiance of the festival. It’s an unequalled opportunity for travel to a beautiful, historic and lesser-known destination featuring amazingly preserved medieval scenic culture and scenery in a context of modern accommodations and extremely reasonable prices.

Although individual events vary, the festival itself is attended by 20,000-30,000 people each year, largely European tourists traveling south for a relaxing venue of great music and culture with an irresistible multitude of peripheral day-trip destinations as well as the sights and scenes of Fes itself, venerable capital of education and culture in North Africa for centuries.

This year’s American performers include America’s Barbara Hendricks’ soulful renditions and gospel’s McCullough Sons of Thunder. Anuna, the beautiful a capella Irish ensemble as well as a Tchechenian women’s ensemble, Syrian Orchestra will join acts representing spiritual traditions from South Africa, Afghanistan, Baghdad and Jewish Morocco. Fes Saiss, the festival organizers, consider it their mission to  assemble and recognize diverse cultures and traditions in the context of interfaith dialogue and spiritual tolerance as a pathway to balance economic and technological globalization.

The World Sacred Music Festival  is an annual event that continues to open doors of opportunity in music and culture in a world of hope and cooperation.
