To know Islam, go to Morocco, US representative

Morocco, Religion, 12/4/2001

To know Islam and its authentic teachings of peace and coexistence, one should go to Morocco, says Doug Teschner, representative of New Hampshire at the US house of representatives.

Teschner, who had sojourned in Morocco some 21 years ago as a Peace Corps Volunteer, made the statement after a trip to Morocco early November, despite the travel phobia that affected the Americans following the September 11 events.

The US representative told MAP bureau here, he met the same welcoming and friendly people that he had met when working in Morocco and that his spouse felt more secure in Morocco than in New York.

He spoke of the joy he felt when he roamed through the medinas and the souks, rediscovering the scents, colors and rustles of the Kingdom and how he was pleased to note the progress scored by the tourism sector over these twenty years. He also noted the development reached by the country at various scales, underlining that liberal professions are thriving, women are present in all sectors of professional activity, and socio-economic development is perceptible everywhere with electricity reaching remote areas and highways criss-crossing the country.

The US representative also related his trip and the emotions he felt when he went back to various Moroccan cities and resorts he visited when he was living in Morocco in a story published by the Friends of Morocco Bulletin, issued by the American association which sponsored the trip to Morocco, in cooperation with a Washington tour operator "The Casablanca Travel and Tours"
